Leonardo Olivieri Carvalho

Hi, I’m Leonardo Olivieri Carvalho — a biomedical scientist based in Brazil, with a degree in Biomedicine (specialisation in molecular biology) and a postgraduate qualification in Higher Education Teaching.

I am 40 years old, and my career has taken me through research laboratories, academic writing, digital art, game development, and health science communication. That combination has shaped a way of thinking about health that is both rigorously scientific and genuinely accessible.


Academic Background

I completed my undergraduate degree in Biomedicine at Universidade Paulista (UNIP), with a specialisation in molecular biology. My final undergraduate project focused on the proteomics of human neutrophil nuclei — the molecular mapping of proteins in immune cells that play a central role in inflammation and infection response.

After graduating, I joined the LBPQ (Laboratório de Bioquímica e Química de Proteínas) at the Universidade de Brasília (UnB) as a research collaborator under Professor Wagner Fontes. There, I worked on two connected projects examining human neutrophil biology through proteomics: comparing resting and activated neutrophil states to identify molecular targets that could eventually help regulate uncontrolled immune activation, relevant in conditions ranging from tissue injury to multiple organ failure.

That work contributed to a peer-reviewed article published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry (Wiley), one of the leading journals in cell and molecular biology:

I also completed a postgraduate specialisation in Higher Education Teaching at UniCesumar, and participated as a special student in a Biomedical Engineering programme at UnB, where I developed a research piece on the physiology of eating rate and metabolic response.

Additionally, I published a scientific review article on the therapeutic importance of copaiba resin oil, examining its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, in the Revista Eletrônica de Farmácia (2014).


Beyond the Laboratory

After my time in academic research, my path took some unexpected turns, all of which have shaped how I communicate science today.

I spent several years helping university students with academic writing: thesis projects (TCCs), scientific articles, and research methodology. Over roughly a decade, I assisted approximately 20 students across different fields, including health sciences, education, technology, and biological sciences. That experience taught me something important: most people struggle not because they lack intelligence, but because scientific writing is almost never taught clearly. The rules are assumed rather than explained.

Parallel to that, I developed a serious interest in digital art, 3D modelling, character animation, and game development. I have published assets on the Unity Asset Store, character work on ArtStation, and animations through Fab. Building games requires understanding systems: how components interact, how feedback loops work, what makes a design intuitive or opaque. Those turn out to be exactly the right questions to ask about biology too.


Why BioFlowHub Exists

I created BioFlowHub because I kept running into the same frustration: health content online tends to exist at two extremes. On one end, oversimplified articles that distort the science to make it more shareable. On the other, academic papers that are accurate but completely inaccessible to anyone without specialist training.

The middle ground, honest and evidence-based writing that respects the reader’s intelligence without requiring a medical degree to follow, is surprisingly rare.

My background gives me something most health bloggers do not have: actual laboratory research experience, formal training in molecular biology and immunology, and published peer-reviewed work. I know how scientific studies are designed, what their limitations are, and how to read them critically. That shapes every article I write here.

I am not a clinician. BioFlowHub is not a substitute for medical advice, and I am always clear about that. What I can offer is a scientifically grounded perspective on how the body works, what the research actually shows, and how to separate signal from noise in a space saturated with both.
